Boucans, which became buccaneers.
The boucaniers (which later became buccaneers) were under Spanish rule, and when the Spanish tried to drive them off the islands in the 1630s. In response, the buccaneers became pirates and began attacking Spanish ships that sailed nearby, rowing out to them in canoes.  You gotta admire guys who attack armed ships in canoes.  Spunky.
