Yup. Ninth century Yemen.  I bet you were expecting me to say the CIA in the early 1920s, weren’t you?  Al-Kindi, a mathematician and very smart for the ninth century kind of guy, wrote ‘On Deciphering Cryptographic Messages’ – probably with no fun pictures like on Lifehacker.  And definitely didn’t come via an RSS feed.
