The first penalty flags weren’t yellow, but white.  I’m presuming that was an indication of if the referees weren’t sure what was going on, it was the white flag of surrender.  Yellow flags replaced the white ones in 1965.

“Doug, what’s that?” “Ummm…a badger?” “No Doug, I swear to God – WHY IS YOUR PENALTY FLAG ON THE GROUND?!” “Uuuuh, that’s not mine.” “Doug, seriously, you make me so mad I could pee in your coffee cup.”  “What do you mean ‘could’?”
