Dalmatians have some interesting genetic coding: there’s an up to 30% chance that the pup either won’t hear or have limited hearing.  In the times when horses pulled fire engines, dalmatians were originally used because of their relationship with the horse.  There were not afraid to chase and bark at the horse to get them to run faster, with the added bonus of good temperament.  These were the inverse reasons cats would have been a poor firefighter animal choice.  Cats don’t want to do anything you do, hate getting wet, and don’t want to teach children anything about fire safety.  Cats are happy to let you burn.
