"Let the cat out of the bag."

The origins of this idiom are unclear, but some think that it may have come from keeping whip with nine knotted ends known as a “cat o’ nine tails” in a bag while on board early sailing ships.  The cat o’ nine tails was kept in the bag to protect it from salt air.  The cat was “let out of the bag” when someone was to be punished.  I don’t think this is history is true for the phrase, and also I am anti keeping cats in bags.  Unless they are tigers – stick all of them in bags.  They’ll chew off your face.

Looks pretty simple, huh?
