Barista means 'bartender' in Italian.

The baristas in the U.S. don’t have quite the same job as a real Italian barista, but they pull some of the same tricks.  For example, they will both listen to me blather on until I run out of steam and put a tip in the jar.  Hey, maybe I should just put a tip jar next to my microphone…

If my barista could do this, I’d name her Gandalf, ’cause that’s just this side of magical. Come to think of it, her name might be Gandalf. She does wear a big grey hat…
