As Clark Kent, he was a normal human and not invulnerable.

During the Superman Red/Superman Blue time period, if the two Supermans merged and became Clark Kent – Clark was as normal as a normal human.  Stubbed toes, sprained ankles, erectile dysfunction – all could be his, if, the price is right.  And for a while it was right.

“I’m Superman.” “NO, I’m Superman!” No, no one is wearing their underpants on the outside of their costumes, so neither one of you is Superman. Take that.
