Not exactly the best deal ever (at least not for the co-creators), National Comics purchased the rights to Superman from Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for $130.  There’s probably half a dozen Superman related items around your house right now, so you realize that DC Comics (which emerged from National Comics) made more than $130 off Big Blue.  Siegel and Shuster’s families eventually got more of a cut many years after the 1938 sale of Superman.  And the $130 check?  It sold at auction in 2012 for $160,000.  

In 1938, the $130 paid to Siegel and Shuster would have been worth about $2,152 today. Dear DC Comics: I’ve got this great idea about a crime fighting bat-man…
