I’m not sure how, but in China – until the late 1800s – it was considered desirable to (ahem) break young girls’ feet, bind them in cloth so that the feet would grow improperly, and then shove those deformed feet into tiny shoes so that they girls would be more desirable by men.  It makes me cringe just typing those words for you.  The ritual of foot binding was finally outlawed in the early 1900s.  However the ornate shoes would not be lost to history – I’m pretty sure they’re similar to the ones Prince wears on stage.  He came into our world with naturally tiny feet.

Delicate, tiny feet.  And he’s not even Chinese.
