John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

One of the two candidates understood what being on TV meant, and the other was Richard Nixon.  Do I know who won the debate?  No.  Do I know who looked better on TV?  Oh, I sure do.  Nixon had injured his leg on a cross country whistle-stop train tour for his campaingn, and his staff didn’t take into consideration how his pale complexion would look on TV – so he went on with no makeup.  If you’ve ever seen someone on TV with no makeup, they look bad.  If they have a pale complexion, they’re gonna look like they’re dead.  And that’s what happened to Nixon’s campaign against JFK, and the first TV debate between the two was a large nail in the coffin.

Nixon is on the left – one of the only times he’s been on the left. (That’s a political joke. You’re welcome, politi-nerds.)
