A grill or barbecue.

The term “buccaneer” is derived from buccan or boucan, a Caribbean grill that pirates of the Golden Age used in the Florida and Caribbean area.  Because we all know that pirates love barbecue…

Yarrr! Ye found me treasure – now where will I ever find another Ballpark hotdog…

Hardtack.

These biscuits are made from flour, water, and – if you were lucky – salt.  They were hard as rocks because they soften as they are exposed to the elements.  They were easily stored, but according to my pirate sources, were not very tasty.  Be tee dubs, my pirate sources are the internet.

This is hardtack from 1784. Probably still as fresh as the day it was made. Bleh.

Black Bart.

Bartholomew Roberts was quite civilized: wore a waistcoat and red feather in his cap, drank only tea, and had musicians play hymns on Sundays.  And he probably wouldn’t let you play Xbox if you had chores.

The flag flown on the ship of “Black Bart” Bartholomew Roberts. It is said to depict Bart and death holding an hourglass signifying that an enemy vessel’s time was running out. Looks like they’re sharing a mojito to me, but what do I know.

The Pittsburgh Alleghenies.

Ah, it was the rural life for Pittsburgh baseball in the beginning, being named for the nearby mountain range.  Pittsburgh took the name “Pirates” after they were accused of poaching a second baseman from another team.  A reporter wrote that they were “a bunch of pirates”, and the team used it as a nickname for a couple of years – then it stuck.  I tried the same thing, but “Snookie” just didn’t work for me.

Those Pittsburgh Pirates – they’ll steal anything for their team – including a unicorn. Bums.

Pittsburgh.

Wanting to streamiline the city naming process, the United States Board on Geographic Names forced Pittsburgh to drop the ‘h’ and become Pittsburg.  The name change lasted 20 years, which means Pittsburgh has more recently had an “h” at the end of it than the Cubs have won the World Series.  Not that I’m bitter or anything.

Not a misspelling. At least, not in the picture…

Yesterday's PopQuizzical Daily! answer:
Warning that time for surrender was limited.
The hourglass was only one of the scary things you might find on a variant of the ‘Jolly Roger’: skeletons, bleeding hearts, cutlasses, or even a plain black flag.  I loved their album ‘Damaged’.  Wait, wrong black flag.
I hope you enjoyed PopQuizzical’s pirate week.  I know we did.  Yarrr.

Yesterday's PopQuizzical Daily! answer:
Broadside.
In the days of only using sails for power, a warship to fire all of its cannons on one side first could give a crippling and decisive blow to an opposing vessel. Also, I loved Sandra Bullock in that movie ‘The Broadside’. What do you mean that wasn’t the title? Same thing.

Yesterday's PopQuizzical Daily! answer:
Charles Town (modern day Charleston, South Carolina)
Big brass ones.  That’s what Blackbeard had when he performed a successful blockade of Charleston, SC in May 1718.  Charleston had no guard ship, so Blackbeard definitely picked the right city to hold hostage.  Let me ‘splain: blockade=no river travel, no river travel = no money and supplies coming into the city, no money and supplies coming into the city = OMG we’re all going to die.  Sure, that’s the short version.  Just imagine that developing over a week and see how you feel about it.  ‘OMG’ is very subdued, in retrospect.
